I have a 1999 4200 with 72" belly mower and 420 loader, no backhoe like you, unfortunately. My front tires are Titan 25x8.50-14 NHS 4 ply multi-trac turf
tires. My rear tires are also turf. With the mower on the ground, there is at least 4" clearance from the front tires, a bit more than that from the rear tires. It sounds like your ag tires are too large. I'd suggest you talk to your dealer to see if the tires are non-standard for some reason.

I noticed this measurement in a brochure the other day. I believe they are trying to show a torque in lb-ft so that it is independent of the bucket.

There is a SAE spec that standardizes the test method for determining the breakout number. As I recall, it is with the bucket on the ground, and blocks
under the pivot pins so that the tires don't deflect and the tractor doesn't lift the rear end off the ground. the vertical force measured 4 inches back from the leading edge of the cutting edge is the breakout force.

If you divide Deeres number by the distance from the bucket pin to 4" back from the cutting edge, you should have the spec number.

By the way, this is just a comparison number. In the real digging world there
are other loads such as tractor forward drawbar and any fulcrum points under the
bucket that change its effect.

I have a 4200, and do not experience and jerking. I did, however have some surging when trying to creep forward with the hystat. The early
4000's had a thrust washer heat treat problem that caused some problems.

You should search this board using keywords of washer and transmission to see
a couple of issues that have occurred, and see if you have any of the other symptoms.

I was thinking about the importance of matching front and rear tire rolling circumferences, and have some thoughts if anyone cares to discuss.

First, the front and rears will never ever perfectly match each other due
to exact matches are made, tire to tire variation, different wear rates, different loadings, and different tire pressures. This means there will always
be a bit of speed difference. If there is a difference in rotation speed, no matter how slight, then there will be "torsional wind-up" in the drive train.
This torque difference has to be relieved by periodic slippage of one of the tires or else the drive drive shaft would break. On dirt you don't even notice the slight slippage. (I read somewhere that the can't even detect tire slippage until it exceeds 10%). On concrete with high traction it is harder for the tire to slip, but it does eventually.

Second, I don't think any amount of torsional wind-up would hurt the drive train, as it must be designed to take full torque through one axle in those
weird "full loader bucket, backing up a down slope, and there's little weight on the rear axle" situations.

Third, you still want to match as close as possible because tire slippage equals
more tire wear, which is not good.

Lastly, it seems to me that the front axles are usually geared slightly faster so that the front tires "pull themselves out of the way" instead of getting
pushed from the rear.

What do you guys think?

I know something about.

Serious loaders (Caterpillar wheel loaders and track loaders) that use the
loader all the time do put an intermediate link between the tilt cylinder and bucket (one version is called a zbar linkage) that does reverse the cylinder direction. It means that cyl extend curls the bucket, resulting in the most bang for the buck while breaking out the load, and faster dump cycles.

Small tractors don't do it because of cost and complexity. It is much cheaper to just make the cylinder a little bigger to get the force you need, and let the weight of the payload in conjunction with a regenerative circuit to get good bucket dump speed. This way also eliminates 3 more pivot joints so fewer wear points.

If parallel lift is a requirement, then more linkage is needed.

I have the identical set-up, with turf tires, and I don't have any interference
at all. In fact, you need to use the loader to lift the front end of the tractor off the ground to get enough clearance to slide the mower out from underneath. Sounds like a set-up problem.

When buying a blade, be sure to consider lift height. I bought a BushHog angle/tilt/offset model and tryed to put it on my 4200 with turf tires. The 3 point pins were so high that I could hardly lift it off the ground.

Skid shoes aren't available for my 45 Deere blade, so I just bolted a 2x6 to
the back angle iron on the back of the blade. This is so I don't scrape the asphalt. I did play around with the center link length to try cutting closer.
I found that the metal edge would pull up rocks out of the asphalt if I let it
touch.

Is there any reason you couldn't cut it shorter if 8' is too hard to pull? A torch would make short work out of it.

I have a 4200 with turf tires, belly mower, and loader and have been very pleased with the turfs. I bought chains thinking I would need them for snow blading, but this was not the case, and I've never put them on. Traction was fine for 6 inch snows. If your into ice then I doubt the tread makes any difference anyway.

I've also not had any problems using the loader with them. Perhaps part of the reason is that mostly I use the loader in mid hystat range which limits the torque and prevents tire slippage. Since the loader is not a bulldozer, I try not to abuse it by excessive work in low range.

Yes, turfs will squat, but so what? If you're not exceeding the load rating and not running at high speed, I don't think it hurts anything.

I have also noticed the delay when dumping an empty bucket, and have chalked it up to air in the cylinder, but have not tried to bleed it yet. There are also those extension lines along the left
push arm which are dead-ended and might hold some air. My 420 loader has a dump circuit regeneration circuit, which means when the control lever is pushed all the way to the right the rod end oil is fed back into the head end along with the pump flow. This speeds up the dump cycle. Could this be why it is
speeding up on you?

When the tire slips, you want the tire to push the mud or loose soil out from
under the tire so that the next bar can grip firmer soil to maximize traction.

That said, the front tires on motor graders are typically put on the other way
to aid in traction while steering. Can't say I understand that one.

My Belly mower has aspring attached to the wheel yoke shaft, If the wheel comes off the ground the spring pulls back to keep the wheel pointed straight. What
does the dealer say?

The motors I'm familiar with are called bent axis motors. They contain 5 to 9 pistons push against a rotating plate at somewhere around 25 deg from perpendicular. Similar to a gas engine with a crank, they are timed so that only some of them are pressurized at one time, causing rotation in one direction. To reverse the motor, the pistons on the other side are energized.
So at any point of time, some pistons are pushing against the plate (which is attached to the output shaft)some are open to tank and are being pushed back to be ready accept oil for the next revolution.

Its hard to describe in words, isn't it?

I bought a Campbell Hausfeld 6 hp Brigs that generated 2100 psi at 2 gpm last spring. I loaned it to a neighbor last fall, and then put it in the basement without trying it for the winter. When I did try it last month, it wouldn't generate any pressure. It turns out the wobble bearing went out. Although it was out of warranty, Campbell Hausfeld sent me a complete replacement pump at no charge.

Lessons learned:
Don't loan out power equipment to neighbors???
Campbell Hausfeld earned my respect for support beyond the warranty
Think about local service. Had I not fixed it myself, I would have had to
go 2 hours away for a dealer.
Don't let the warranty lapse before checking out a product that sat several months.

As far as performance, I was disappointed that 2100 psi could not remove fly specks from my vinyl siding, even after soaking with soap. On pressure treated decks it works great, and can eat a hole through it if your so inclined.

The colder weather has me thinking about snow! I have a Deere 45 blade on a 4200, and will be clearing a 1500 ft asphalt drive this winter. I may also be cleaning my neighbors exposed agregate drive. Will the steel cutting edge of a blade damage either surface? Is a rubber or UHMW cutting edge necessary?thanks,Brent

I have this blade on a 4200 and it works well. Do note that it does not
have a replaceable cutting edge. This will probably never be an issue for me,
but might be for someone else.

I originally ordered a bushhog blade that had a tilt and offset feature. What
I didn't realize is that these features pushed the 3point pins up so high that
I could hardly lift it off the ground. My dealer agreed to keep it and sell me the 45 blade to get me out of trouble.

No, I always could generate good pulling effort, and the wheels would never stop while under load. You've got something wierd going on. Good luck.

I just had my 4200 hystat in the shop, and one of its symptoms was the extreme
growling noise in reverse. The solution for me was a new transmission. They
said that one of the bearings was bad and another going bad.

I can't say if this has anything to do with your problem, but is worth considering.
